"I really enjoyed working with you-- I learned more in that one hour than I learned the whole time I was with my other instructor."

-Randy R., Autumn 2006

Welcome

Welcome to my teaching site for singing lessons and voice lessons. I do work as a private vocal instructor and coach in three cities weekly (San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego) and nationwide by request. I have focused my studies through my life on the voice pretty much solely, first as a performer in my classical music studies and then as an instructor as I become more and more interested in the function of the voice as an instrument and as a communicating tool. I am also very interested in how classical technique can translate into other genres such as rock, pop, blues and the genre I perform these days - jazz.

In addition to my private students and performance schedule, I also do on-site lessons for groups including lawyers, salespeople, and public speakers and am available for recording studios, choral groups, and law offices alike. I find the spoken voice to be very interesting and the technical aspects of the voice a source of never-ending interest and research.

Previous clients in spoken voice lessons include lawyers, Sierra Club, Silicon Valley presenters, major legal firms, voice-over artists, actors, instructors of classes like pilates, yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, College professors, and others.  Previous clients in singing voice include majour international pop and rock stars, people just starting out, people wanting to sing for fun, Award-winning singers, beginners, professional opera singers, fillms, and recording and management companies.

About this studio

This full-time studio operates in San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles with occasional workshops in New York and other places by request. The technique is based in Bel Canto, a classical method but it is modified as it pertains to spoken voice and singing in pop, rock, blues, musical theatre, jazz, and other singers when working with them. Classical singers are also accepted and there is a strong technique emphasis (how to use the voice for better sound, volume, and safety).

We are economical

Student comments comparing our studio to others indicate that clients feel they learn much faster here. Some quotes and estimates (more quotes):

"For a year and a half, I was going to [to another studio 2 hours/week]. I was getting a little better but when I tried the first lesson with you, I learned more in that half hour than with my other teacher in two hours and it costs less than half! I even think I learned more than the whole year and a half before." - Mike S.
  •     Tuition at previous studio: $464/month (approximate).
  •     Tuition that was paid here: $194/month (when we offered half hour sessions)
  •     Savings: $270/month ($3240/year) - client indicated she was learning more here in one-quarter the time investment.

"...it blew my mind how much I learned [in one month]. I plan to come back twice a year for one month. I learned much more than when I was going weekly for a year with [name of old instructor withheld]." - Andy R.
  •     Tuition for a year at previous studio: $3010 ($250/mo average)
  •     Tuition for one year of study here (2 months a year): $684/year ($57/lesson (40 minutes each) on average).
  •     Savings: $2326/year or $193/month

"Yes, I have had some private vocal lessons in my past, and I have taken a voice class at the college level...but I really felt like I got more out of my 1 class with you than those both put together!" - Michaela B.

  •     Combined cost of previous study (private lessons and group class): $790;
  •     Cost of an equivalent amount of learning here (as stated by the client): $100 (when we offered 60 minute lessons)
  •     Savings: $690

Ellie's Credentials

There are no associates and so every client and student sees Eleonor in person. This is an important difference between this studio and many others because the results are consistent and because sometimes in prestigious and expensive studios that is not the case.

When comparing studios notice the achievement of the students. Often these achievements are the combined achievements of several instructors (or hundreds in one case I know of) rather than just one person. And also notice that the time frame is infinite. It would be like if I named my own teachers' achievements as well as their students students and their associates' students for their entire teaching careers alongside my own. In that case, it would include successful Metropolitan Opera auditions, entire operatic and jazz careers, Carnegie Hall performances, and so forth. However, just to give you an idea of the percentage of success this studio enjoys with only 30 hours a week of instructor time and no associates, here are a small selection of the achievements of the students and clients from just one real example year:

  •     a 100% admission record to clients' school of choice
  •     Multiple international jazz festival appearances including internationally headlining
  •     Special guest of BB King - opening for him by request
  •     Majour music festivals
  •     Opening for Nora Jones
  •     Opening for Neil Young
  •     Headlining international jazz festival
  •     Successful play auditions and company auditions for actors (spoken voice)
  •     Playing majour venues in all three cities including 4th & B (San Diego), House of Blues (Los Angeles), Plush Room (San Francisco) and more.
  •     Pop hit - international charts - #7
  •     Jazz hit - international charts - #8
  •     Country Blues hit - internet charts (based on downloads) - #7
  •     MTV contract for music and singing-related series
  •     TV based talent show (name withheld as per agreement)
  •     Opera - 100% admission rate to school of choice
  •     International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalist
  •     Nomination Blues Album of the Year
  •     Co-bill with Bobby Blue Bland, blues legend and lifetime grammy award recipient
  •     Majour record label interest
  •     Indie record label interest
  •     Beginners - singing at own wedding
  •     Beginning jazz students playing out for the first time ever (very proud of you guys!!!)
  •     Injury recovery to the point of being able to sing again withouth hoarseness
  •     Students from 5 different countries came out to the USA for intensive studies (or maybe it was just to avoid getting bombed at random)

The record for this voice studio throughout the years (not just the year in question) includes TV and radio, international top ten pop and jazz hits, recording and industry credits, admission to music schools (including Berklee, Manhattan School of Music graduate program, NYU musical theatre dept, New England School of Music graduate program, and more), film soundtracks, demo & full-length cd's, and so forth plus work in spoken voice including talk radio, the legal department of the Sierra Club, Funky Door Yoga, and more.

A very common comment by singers with previous background upon taking just a lesson or two here is that they feel that the one or two lessons were more productive than their entire training elsewhere. While I don't necessarily agree, many students and clients make this comment and feel this studio is a very economical way to go since the learning rate for them is somewhat high. (see Quotes and Brags).

If you are willing to commit to a year study prior to an audition for a school or other institution, we have a 98% acceptance rate for the clients' schools of choice after a year or more of study. Despite fast results, voice study is not something where one lesson will fix all that ails a singer, however good the instructor is.

I love what I do - both performing and teaching - and if I won the lottery tomorrow I would keep doing it because it is my life's work. I am looking forward to both your questions and getting to work with some of you for private or group voice lessons or for consulting work. Thanks for your interest in me & my work and for visiting my voice lessons teaching website. If you have any questions about the voice lessons, please email and we can try to get them answered for you! Thanks for taking the time to visit.

Sincerely,
Eleonor England
